Do you recognize this man?

I sometimes do drawings or sketches of important characters. If you've read Queen of Swords you may recognize this man.

Tomorrow when I post some of the background on Curiosity, I may post her sketch as well.

And by the way, any sketches I post are my original work and my copyright. Please don't use them in anyway without getting my explicit permission first.

Edited to add:

Someone asked about the coloring you see here. This is in fact a pencil drawing, but I decided to do the eyes in watercolor. That accounts for the lack of color in complexion. Ben is tri-racial, and his skin is medium dark with a strong reddish cast.

There is an interesting website about the family history of tri-racial groups in Virginia with some great photos, here.

Hello Ben! Cann't wait to hear more of your story in book 6!

Jean-Benoit Savard aka Ben. Yup.

If nothing else, the eye color gives it away.

In a good way, give away?

That would have to be Ben.

I am so looking forward to seeing your drawing of Curiosity. I was shopping in the supermarket the other day and an elderly African woman (which we don't see very often in Australia - at least where I live) was looking at the fresh produce. She immediately caught my eye because I hadn't seen a lady with her looks since I was in New Orleans in 1996 and the first thing that came into my mind was she looks exactly how I picture Curiosity!

Sorry this has nothing to do with the sketch I just got QOS Rosina and I wanted to say I love your picture on the book jacket. You look great!!!

8. Rosely spoke up on November 9, 2006 6:34 AM and said:

Wow! I had pictured Ben so different. But now, looking at the sketch, it fits so much with your description of him. If we do not put in a paper, it seems that our mind takes its own ways...

Rosina, I am so glad I've found this web/forum, and have the opportunity to enjoy all the things you share with us. I have learned a lot. Thank you.

Yep its definitely the eyes that give him away. It only took me 2 days to read QoS and last night I was reading the Author's note at the end, the part about patience....I'll try, really I will but it will be difficult.

10. Beth R spoke up on November 9, 2006 10:24 AM and said:

Rosina, Yes in a good way...that is exactly the eye color I pictured. The rest of his face is pretty close to what I pictured as well, except that you have his face narrower than what I saw in my mind's eye.

11. Jeanne spoke up on November 9, 2006 5:41 PM and said:

Rosina, I din't know you drew too. I pictured Ben with a more redish brown complection and his face a little rounder. Not fat just not so long. But that may be because the Native Americans around here have very round faces. Mostly Navajo with a few Apache. That's not to say I don't like your sketch, I do. And the one of Courisity too. Jeanne

12. Rosina Lippi spoke up on November 9, 2006 5:58 PM and said:

Jeanne -- that's a pencil drawing. I used watercolor for the eyes but otherwise, no color, because I wanted the contrast. His complexion would indeed have a reddish cast if I had done the whole thing in watercolor. I'm just more comfortable with pencil.

I worked from descriptions of so-called Redbones in Louisiana, a group of people descended from all three races, which is why the bone structure you see here.

13. Alison spoke up on November 12, 2006 4:26 PM and said:

The eyes were definitely the giveaway. I also imagined Ben to be a little wider in the face/cheekbones.
Rosina, you don't by any chance have a drawing of Bears (at ITW stage) - he is one of my favourite characters and I would love to see how you picture him.

14. Alison spoke up on November 12, 2006 4:33 PM and said:

Sorry - back again because I just clicked on the link to those amazing photos and drawings. And hey, did you see the one of Tecumseh?
I find those sorts of websites dangerously fascinating. (i.e. spend too much time looking at them instead of working/ironing/calling my mother)

They are great photos, aren't they?

*swoon*

I heart Ben.
