This isn't quite a male-female friend crush reference, but I found that Pat Barker's "Regeneration" trilogy offered some profound insights into masculine friendship. In particular, that grey area between friendship-love and romantic but asexual love between men is beautifully handled and raises some very interesting issues to ponder over.

Meredith, I agree with you, that is a lovely trilogy. I think I'll have to re-read it with the friendship theme in mind.
